Maternity photography is a perfect way to document the joys of pregnancy and capture the beauty of motherhood. Over the past 20 years, maternity sessions have become increasingly popular, as many expecting couples are keen to capture the beauty and magic of their pregnancy journey. Maternity photography is the perfect way to document important milestones such as the first trimester, the baby bump, and the moment when your little one enters the world. Professional maternity photographers capture beautiful images that will will last a lifetime. Imagine your grandchildren admiring your beautiful prints of you when you had their parents in your womb!! It’s such a special way to remember a very unique, albeit short, time in your life.
It is important to choose a photography style that reflects your personal tastes and preferences. Whether you prefer something more classic, modern, or a combination of the two, there are plenty of maternity photography options to choose from. It’s important to make sure you find a style that resonates with you. It will make for a far more meaningful experience.
Natural, outdoor lifestyle sessions can capture the beauty of pregnancy in a more candid, natural way. If you’d like to take maternity photos in a local park or you prefer the comfort of your home, a lifestyle maternity session is probabl best for you.
Alternatively, an indoor studio shoot can allow for more creative control over lighting and props to create a more refined, editorial look. A big positive to having your session in a studio is that it’s not weather dependant which means undesirable conditions or other outdoor distractions can’t negatively affect your session.
Although I specialise in in-studio portraiture, fine art outdoor sessions can definitely be arranged at certain times throughout the year.
I have a pre-session styling call for all of my clients to discuss colours, themes and what to wear. We will use a combination of simple clothing, draped fabrics, maternity dresses and luxury gowns. It all depends on what feels like you. Some clients choose to wear more simple silhouettes while others are drawn to the draping and gowns.
Avoid overly busy patterns and clashing colors, opting instead for solids in calming shades. This will help ensure that the focus is on the mother and her beautiful baby bump without competing with distracting elements in the background.
I also have a selection of fun with accessories, like hats and jewellery, to add sparkle and personality to your photos.
Accessorise with statement jewellery, shoes, and hats to bring an extra bit of personality to your photos The combination of your inherently beautiful pregnancy glow with good styling will make your pictures truly special and one-of-a-kind. Don’t be afraid to be creative and add that little something extra to complete the look.
It is important to properly cleanse and moisturise your skin before any photoshoot, especially one involving a pregnant belly. It’s important to make sure your skin is in the best condition possible especially if you’re choosing to show more skin. Before the shoot, double cleanse with a gentle cleanser and follow up with a hydrating moisturizer, as this will help create a natural glow for your photos. If you have problematic skin or you’re prone to breakouts, make sure to exfoliate the night before and use a spot treatment if necessary. Exfoliating beforehand will help remove any dry or flaky patches on the skin for a smoother skin texture.
If you want to tan, make sure you do it at least 24 hours before so your tan doesn’t come off on the backdrops and studio equipment.
Make sure to use products that are safe for both you and your baby, such as natural oils or creams specifically made for pregnancy. Natural oils and creams are a great option as they are made with ingredients that are safe for both you and your baby. Check out my list of pregnancy safe moisturisers and body lotions here.
Try using a good hair mask in the days before your session to add some extra shine to your locks and make sure it’s clean and ready for styling the night before.
As a professional photographer, I have countless poses that I can suggest during our session to make you look your best. But it doesn’t hurt to look through Pinterest and get some posing ideas beforehand. Practicing in front of a mirror can help you walk into your session feeling more prepared and confident in how you’ll be moving your body.
Now that you’ve prepped everything it’s time to head to your session and capture your beautiful bump!
