Indian weddings in Australia are typically quite extravagant and last several days, but with current times and obvious *ahem* sicknesses *ahem* throwing a curveball, many couples have been forced to navigate around a new normal. With this in mind, Sydney wedding planner Poonam Gururajan took inspiration to organise an elegant styled Indian wedding shoot which showcases what is possible even in the midst of a pandemic.

The shoot was beautifully curated to highlight the importance of colour and the strong sense of emotion it evokes in Indian weddings. This is a story of the modern-day bride and her dashing groom celebrating/cherishing the raw and meaningful moments between each other.

Together with their team of local suppliers, Emma Wright and Poonam opted for a romantic palette of dark, moody, rich and red and pink textures with subtle hints of gold and beige. Florists, Fable Studio Co transformed the space, creating a magnificent, contemporary installation full of mixed fresh, dried and preserved flowers, and seasonal foliage. For added texture, Sai Garlands handcrafted heavy wedding garlands for the couple, full of baby’s breath and rich red roses. The bride’s floral bouquet and flower comb included a mix of vibrant colours to create balance.

To complement the theme, stationer, Ratanji Rani created handmade vow books, signifying new beginnings for the couple. Two souls coming together, cherishing their love for one another, whilst still preserving cultural traditions.

Vintage furniture pieces and candles were also utilized to fit the romantic ambience.

In keeping with and respecting the traditions of a Hindu wedding, Poonam ensured that her bride was adorned with henna art applied by Sydney henna artist, Henna by Maziah, as well as wore an elegant and bold kundan bridal jewellery set fit for a queen from Perth based Modernday Rani. With thanks to Brisbane based business, Raaja Rani, we draped the bride in a custom designed rani pink velvet bridal lehenga outfit which features
traditional hand embroidery zari work and intricate beading detail. To complete the full bridal look, hair and makeup artist, Sabrina added dramatic smokey eye makeup, with intense contouring, coupled with a natural, voluminous up-do hairstyle, highlighting the bride’s sensual beauty.

As for our dashing Raj, he wore a traditional and regal gold and cream sherwani suit, also from Raaja Rani, which featured a pink pocket square. The richness of the sherwani suit is enhanced by the contrasting turban.

To celebrate the love between the newlyweds, we ventured outdoors with the vintage Indian taxi company, Bollywood Cars, to capture the joy of wedded bliss. A wonderfully vibrant garland shaped in a heart was placed on the bonnet, signifying the strong bond and romance between the couple.

Love always prevails in difficult times. We truly hope that our intimate wedding shoot is proof that even in the midst of a global pandemic, you can still combine heritage with modern elegance.
